Packing Your Belongings... Part 2
In last month's Life on the Go we focused on packing your clothing and gave you an idea of how many articles of clothing to pack. No matter where your travel nursing assignment is these tips are helpful while packing and can give you a guideline to follow while trying to prioritize everything as you are getting ready to leave for your assignment.
While packing your belongings for a new adventure in possibly a new city, toiletries are usually the last thing thought of, but a trip where you left them behind could be a memorable one. Luckily though, toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste can be bought for nearly the same price at convenient stores located throughout the U.S. But, if you prefer a special brand, purchase enough to last for the time you are away.
Packing your toiletries: Toiletries can take up as little or as much space as you would like. When packing, keep in mind if you haven't used a specific curling iron or hair gel in the last couple months it may not be necessary to take it with you on your travel nursing assignment. But, depending on the time of year you are traveling and where you are going, you may want to bring specific toiletries with you: for example, sunscreen.
- Toothbrush, tooth cleaner and floss: If you know ahead of time that you will not be able to get to a convenience store when you arrive at your new assignment, it may be a good idea to pack some tooth care essentials just in case. If you are traveling by plane make sure to pack these items in a zip-lock bag in your checked luggage, and also have small travel sizes available for your carry on; you never know if your luggage will be lost or if there is a delay.
- Shaving cream and razors: If you prefer a specific type or brand of shaving cream or a specific type of razor, you may also want to bring your favorites with you. These particular toiletries can be found at your local convenience store and if you are not able to find your favorite brand a close substitute will be available. A particular razor that is good for traveling for both male and females is the AVIDŽ4; it is light in weight and can be used approximately 40 times. This razor is very compact taking up very little space and making it easy to pack.
- Shampoo, conditioner and soap: Whether you are traveling by ground or air it is also a good idea to pack small containers of shampoo, conditioner and body wash. You will be glad you did if your luggage is lost or if you are unable to get to a store when you arrive at your new home. - Towels, washcloths and bathroom accessories: When traveling on a nursing assignment you have the option for your temporary home to be fully furnished. If you choose this option, many of your accessories will be there for you when you arrive. If you have a special towel or bathroom accessory, it is easy to bring with you and may make your new place feel more like home. Towels are relatively inexpensive and can be found at a local department store or convenience store in your new area, but most often you will find they are provided for you in your new home.
While traveling, toiletries are essential accessories for everyone. On your travel nursing assignment make sure to think through what you may or may not need while away. Packing toiletries for your travel nursing assignment should not take up much space and you should remember to avoid packing anything that may break or take up a lot of space. But just remember that most toiletries can be bought at a local convenience store; you will be able to either buy your favorite brand or a close substitute.
