Medical-Surgical Nurse

Traveling nurses in the field of Medical-Surgical Nursing are registered nurses who work in hospitals, acute care units, home care, and long-term care facilities to provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures. They also attend to those who are being treated with medications to manage illness. Although most associate med/surg nursing with caring for patients in a hospital after illness, injury or surgery, the field actually includes nurses who care for adults with acute health conditions, whether in outpatient facilities, hospitals or long-term care facilities. Features of patient care may include patient education, pain management, case management, discharge planning and other channels to restore or maintain patients' physical and psychosocial health.

Medical-Surgical nursing has long been considered the cornerstone of nursing, the clinical area where recent graduates began their training to get basic experience. Medical-Surgical adult health nursing practice has served as the launch pad to specialization in other areas of nursing, such as oncology, cardiology, neurology, and more. These nurses may have additional expertise with ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or be certified by the ANCC (American Nurse Credentialing Center) in Med/Surg Nursing.
