Pediatric Critical Care / Pediatric Intensive Care Nursing
Traveling nurses in the field of Pediatric Intensive Care Nursing concentrate in the care and hospitalization of young patients ranging in age from infancy to late teens. They may practice in areas such as immunology or oncology. PICU nurses answer to the physical and psychosocial aspects of health and illness, concern for health promotion and disease prevention, control of physical and mental disabilities, and acknowledgement to acute and chronic illness.
Pediatric Intensive Care nurses work in an array of situations, filling a variety of roles. They are clinical nurse specialists, bedside clinicians, nurse managers, nurse educators, nurse researchers, and nurse practitioners. With the beginning of managed care and the resulting migration of patients to alternative settings, PICU nurses are now called upon to treat sicker patients more than ever before. These nurses may have additional expertise with PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), or be certified by the ANCC (American Nurse Credentialing Center) in Pediatric Nursing.
