Ask a Travel Nurse: What happens if my agency cannot find another Travel Nursing position in my desired area?

Ask a Travel Nurse Question:

I am thinking about leaving the hospital I’m currently working at for Travel Nursing. However, my travel area is small because I have a family and do not wish to relocate. I’m concerned about taking a 13-week assignment and then being left without work if I don’t want to travel farther. What happens if my agency cannot find another position in my desired area?

Ask a Travel Nurse Answer:

Hello. What happens is what you might already expect … you have to find work elsewhere.

Rarely can concurrent travel assignments be guaranteed in areas other than large cities, where it is much more likely. In some places (AZ and FL), you might see tons of assignments in the winter and few in the summer (when all the snowbird residents migrate back to other homes).

It really depends on the location, how many facilities are in that location, and how many of those facilities regularly use Travel Nurses.

You can also work registry or agency to fill gaps in employment as well as strike work if you don’t mind traveling to other locations for a minimal time to make a couple weeks to a month’s worth of pay.

Sorry to say, but Travel Nursing is primarily designed for those looking to travel to a bevy of locations and not necessarily someone looking to stay in such a focused area. However, like I said above, it all depends on your specific area!
