Clinical Corner: Narcotics
by Joe Bryowsky, RN, CCRN
Wasting of narcotics is a function that almost every nurse has to perform during his or her career. The frequency that a nurse has to waste narcotics can vary anywhere from only occasionally to multiple times per shift.
It is important for a nurse to know the proper way to waste narcotics because it only take one incidence of improperly wasting a narcotic to potentially jeopardize your nursing license(s).
The “rule of thumb ” is to have another licensed personnel (that is also allowed to administer the same narcotic) to witness the waste as it occurs. Then both personnel immediately either document, or enter into the medication administration system, the waste.
This is only a “rule of thumb ” so be very cautious and assume nothing! Always consult the policy and procedure manual at your current travel location. It is important that you follow your hospitals policies regarding wasting of narcotics to the letter.
Remember that policies regarding wasting narcotics can vary from hospital to hospital. The policies are typically based on Federal law, DEA requirements and State law but past incidences that have happened at a particular hospital can also play into any hospital policy.
Know your hospitals policy regarding wasting narcotics! Adhere to it! Protect your license!
