I’m a brand new traveler considering my first assignment in Fairbanks, AK. My recruiter says the hospital provides housing? and it may be shared?
What questions should I be asking to insure I’m not ending up in dorm room with no storage. I’m an outdoor lover who is planning to take some toys, kayaks, SUP’s and backpacking equipment. I had envisioned a private place to store equipment while I work and explore.
And what other advise for first time travelers?

It’s great that the hospital provides housing, because you are probably going to make more money that way. I would ask your recruiter what your options are if you don’t take the shared housing. They should be able to quote you on your pay based on taking the hospital provided housing, housing stipend in which you would find your own place or private housing. That way you can see if the difference in pay is worth it for you to have your own space and store your toys. The pay will change dramatically so just be aware of that.
Housing in Alaska can be very difficult and expensive based on the time that you are traveling. If it’s high season there may not be a rental available for 3 months or however long your assignment is. Also, I am not sure what company you are working with, but maybe they don’t have a housing department that provides private housing. Since you are first time traveler there are companies out there that will give you those choices. Medical Solutions provides 100% paid private housing.
I imagine the shared housing does not allow pets, but you never know. If you don’t like pets you may want to check on those specifics as well. Do each of you have your own separate televisions and bathrooms? Just some things to think about. Alaska sounds like a fabulous place to start out your first travel experience.
