President Trump recently named Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams as acting surgeon general, according to The New York Times. Trent-Adams, one of the first nurses to be appointed to the office, is also the first non-physician surgeon general. Dr. Richard Carmona, the surgeon general who served during the Bush administration, was both a physician and a nurse, according to the report.
Trent-Adams replaces Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, who was asked to step down following the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations. Despite his initial refusal to resign, Dr. Murthy has praised his former deputy as “the right person to step into this role.”
Prior to her role as deputy surgeon general, she served as the deputy associate administrator for the HIV/AIDS bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration. Before that, Trent-Adams joined the Commissioned Corps of Public Health Service in 1992. She also served as a nurse officer in the Army and a research nurse at the University of Maryland, where she earned her PhD.
