What Is an Oncology Nurse?

An oncology nurse is a registered nurse who cares for patients before, during, and after cancer treatment. From administering therapies to monitoring symptoms, educating patients, coordinating care, and offering steady support, oncology nurses play a critical role in every stage of the cancer care journey.

Oncology nurses work in hospitals, cancer centers, infusion clinics, outpatient settings, and specialty units. Your work takes clinical skill, compassion, attention to detail, and the ability to help patients and families navigate some of their most important moments with confidence and care.

Certification & Licensure for Oncology Nurses

Oncology nurses must hold an active registered nurse license in the state where they practice. Travel oncology nurse positions commonly require Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and recent oncology or infusion experience, while individual facilities may have additional qualifications. Some employers may also prefer specialty credentials such as the Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification, along with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or biotherapy administration training. Eligible travel oncology nurses with a multistate license can practice in participating Nurse Licensure Compact states, while other states require separate licensure.
