Stepdown Travel Nursing Jobs

What Is a Stepdown Nurse?

A stepdown nurse cares for patients who need a higher level of monitoring than a standard medical-surgical unit can provide, but who are stable enough to transition out of the intensive care unit. Also called progressive care nurses, intermediate care nurses, or PCU nurses, stepdown nurses help bridge the gap between critical care and recovery.

Stepdown nurses often care for patients with cardiac conditions, respiratory needs, post-surgical complications, complex medication plans, or telemetry monitoring. It’s a fast-paced specialty where strong assessment skills, quick decision-making, and steady communication make a meaningful difference.

Certification & Licensure for Stepdown Nurses

Stepdown nurses must hold an active registered nurse license in the state where they plan to work. Most travel stepdown nurse jobs also require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications, with some facilities preferring experience in progressive care, telemetry, cardiac stepdown, or intermediate care. Travel stepdown nurses with a compact license can work across participating Nurse Licensure Compact states without applying for a new license each time.
