Life on the go:
Your New Year

It's that time of the year again when New Year's resolutions are streaming through your mind. Year after year most of us struggle to make a resolution and stay committed to following through on our promise. Often we give up after just a couple of weeks. As a traveling nurse your time is of the essence and we understand that you are on the go and helping others, so this year we have some ideas to help you succeed.

No matter where you are or how busy you are, New Year's resolutions are a struggle for almost everyone to keep. Make this year the year to stay true to your resolution and accomplish your goal. The New Year is a time to look back on your past year, reflect on the good and the bad and make a commitment to make a positive change in 2008. Whether you want to learn a new language, pay off debt or write a book, whatever you choose, make sure it's something personal and meaningful to you. Here are some tips to help you succeed with your 2008 resolutions.

Selecting your resolution
The first and most important part of your New Year's resolution is figuring out a practical and sustainable resolution. Try to identify a resolution that will benefit you in a way that will make you feel good about yourself. It can be related to your health and weight, your relationships, a goal of taking more quality time for yourself or even a commitment to take a class or read more. But make sure you are selecting a resolution that is attainable.

Create a plan
The first step to formulating a plan is to identify and write down exactly the steps you will need to take to begin and how you want to go about taking them to achieve your goal. These steps need to be clear enough for you to be able to put these into action and have a step by step process of what to do next and what is required from each step. The power of putting your goals down on paper can be a surprisingly effective way to maintain your focus and stick to you resolutions.

Plan NOW
It's the first few days in January where you have motivation for keeping your New Year's resolutions; it's after the first couple days or week where your drive and resolve may dwindle. If you plan immediately you will be more likely to succeed and follow through with your resolution.

Solicit Support
Share your resolution with someone who will support you in your resolution goal. Even if you are in a new location and may not know many people, you can choose a friend from home that you can call when you need encouragement and motivation to stay on task. By asking for support you have a greater chance of succeeding.

Think year round
Nothing gets accomplished overnight. Set realistic goals and take small steps that work for you throughout the year, you will have a better chance of sticking to your resolution and achieving your goal. Look at your New Year's resolution as a starting point and plan that over time will develop into a habit or ritual, it will eventually become something you do automatically.

Stay Flexible
Life is unpredictable and can throw many obstacles in your way, be open and realize that you may need to alter your resolution and plan to best fit into your life. Being flexible will help you stick to your resolution even if you need to make some changes to your plan along the way. Reward your successes, even if it is just asking the person you have chosen to support you to praise your efforts. A little bit of praise can go a long way in keeping you motivated and feeling good about your accomplishments.

Here are some New Year's resolution ideas to help you get started thinking about your own:
  • Travel more
