The goal in the cardiovascular operating room is to provide successful services and perform successful cardiovascular (open-heart) and sometimes lung surgeries. The CVOR nurses has a key role in orchestrating a successful surgery, with duties that include documenting and assessing the patient’s status and vitals before, during, and after surgery; ensuring and operating necessary machinery; applying dressings and cleaning the incision site; administering medications; ensuring patient safety and sterile procedure before, during, and after surgery; assisting the surgeon; and planning and monitoring the care plan at every stage of the journey. CVOR nurses may also assist with anesthesia/sedation.

Who Works in the CVOR?

A wide range of healthcare professionals work in the cardiovascular operating room in order to properly serve their patients before, during, and after a very serious surgery. CVOR team members can include CVOR RNs, surgical techs, anesthesiologists, surgeons, administrative staff, and social workers/case managers.

Who’s Treated in the CVOR?

Patients who visit the cardiovascular operating room are, as the name suggests, there for cardiovascular surgery, also often referred to as open-heart surgery. So, the patients have some type of cardiovascular ailment, condition, or emergency that has necessitated their cardiovascular surgery. These patients can either be very ill and/or really depending on their surgeries to give them new life — so the stakes are very high in this unit. Patients could get procedures that include heart valve replacement or repair, heart transplant, artificial heart insertion (TAH), coronary artery bypass grafting, pacemaker insertion, maze surgery, aneurysm repair, ventricular assist device insertion (VAD), insertion of implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), or other such procedures.
